20 x 16 oil on wood
5(5) Book of Jonah Series. Jonah sits outside the city, unhappy with God’s mercy and grace. (Jonah 4:5)
Oil on hardboard

This is a painting done in a style akin to Georges Rouault or Emil Nolde who heavily influenced my art in college. The heavy black lines and rough impasto technique impart an emotional impact. There is action in the painting and a lone figure of Christ standing on the bow of the ship. The Apostles remain huddled against the wind and the waves of the storm. The sail has been drawn up and the oars are out.

This is an icon interpretation painting. Colors and shapes have been retained from the original icon but details have been blunted by use of palette knife and heavy impasto. The effect puts the image into a more emotionally based work through use of rough shapes and colors.
